jon and i did not spent valentine's at an expensive restaurant. or at a cheap restaurant. or even at the kitchen table. we spent our romantic night eating soup on the bathroom floor while sunny and sailor took their baths in our garden tub. halfway through we looked at each other and started laughing.
still, i don't know that i'd rather be anywhere else. after getting jealous of karen's world travels, and feeling more claustrophobic in my life than usual, i remembered something jon said to me long ago. i had just finished reading an article about a new writing professor at wheaton. she had recently published her first novel and had a new son. there was a picture of her posed on a little stone bridge with fall trees in the background - very academic. and i really, really wanted her life. heck, i really, really wanted to BE her. :)
but when i told all of this to jon, he said:
what part of your life now would you give up to have her life?
your friends? your church? your preschool job?
your house? your neighbors? your crazy pets?
your children?
me?
and i answer still (as i answered that day): truthfully, my dear, i wouldn't give up one piece of my life now. as much as i may long for and dream of greener pastures.... i am so grateful for what i have.
i love it.
i love you.
happy valentine's day.
