sunny's new favorite possession in the whole wide world is about four inches across by five inches long. it doesn't "vroom," or "oooo," or even "beep." it's a dealer catalogue for john deere toys my dad came across somewhere. it has almost 40 small flimsy pages full of every john deere toy imaginable, from the traditional tractors to teething rings to ride-on trucks. who knew there was such a wealth of deere merchandise available to the truly enamored (ie my son)? almost every page has a clumsy pencil circle around one toy or another. and when we told him we couldn't get him everything he wanted for his birthday, he started asking for everything for "my chri-mas." (that's Christmas, without the "s").
his current love is the "john deere 12 volt ride-on buck." that's bucking gator, for those of you in the know: a small truckish atv often used by farmers or ranchers to get around and haul small loads. unfortunately, as far as well can tell, the ride-on version retails for about $285. plus shipping.

his dream, apparently, is to ride around the neighborhood with the 17-month old across the street, abigail, who is the proud owner of a ride-on dora car. "abigail rides her dora, and i ride my john deere BUCK," he says over and over. "listen, daddy. listen, mommy. look at my eyes." "you listening now?"
"i can go in the street with my buck?"
"with abigail?"
ah, young love - although whether abigail, the battery-powered buck, or the catalogue is first in his affections is hard to tell.
i think the catalogue probably wins. it goes everywhere with him, even to bed. gee, thanks, gramps. ;)
