sunny takes forever to fall asleep. unless he's absolutely dog-tired (which takes a whole heck of a lot of running around), he will lay in bed for what seems like an eternity. he has a whole grocery list of needs for us to fill, and a myriad of other ways to occupy himself - besides sleeping.
today:
"mommy, i want juice. apple. in my a-b-c cup, the apple one."
and when i bring it in, "i want it right here next to my water. my water in the a-b-c dragonfly cup, mommy." (all of this dialogue, mind you, involves lots of head nodding and repeating on my part. "yes, sunny, your dragonfly a-b-c cup. good idea.")
closely following:
"mommy, i pill. i wet. i need towel. i get it kitchen. " (i dry him up and put him back in bed.)
"i pill again. i need towel again. i pill pillow." (dry him up and move pillow. move cups far away.)
"i need mavis. right here coaches." ( mavis is a thomas the train engine. find mavis, attach to coaches)
listen to him singing and reading books to himself for a while. some toys leave the bed, others are surreptitiously hauled in.
"i need new toy, mommy. you pick it." (no more toys, sunny. time to sleep.)
"i need someting, mommy!"
"what, baby?"
"i don't know. someting. you get it."
eventually he will fall asleep, too late to be ideal, and sleep for a couple of hours. so i sit here and type and wait, and listen to him sing "jingle bells," and push the button on his toy electric sander (no joke).
"it make a noise, mommy. i don't like this toy. you move it."
