taking time

i had big plans for this saturday. BIG. most of them involved jon doing some kind of work. like mowing and trimming the whole yard (it is in desperation mode), putting away the suitcases we emptied two weeks ago, fixing the patio shade in the back yard... the list could go on and on. i assure you.
our day started late, because the kids had a late night and slept in. and jon woke up still stuffy from the cold we've all been fighting and with a headache. so he and the kids spent most of the morning laying down in sailor's bed, reading books. (sunny has a new fascination with tigers. so they read lots of tiger books, as well as sailor's favorites - all of her maisy books, and super cute book by mem fox called, where is the green sheep?)
and then i looked at the clock, and it was time for lunch. and i looked at it again, and it was time for nap.
and guess what.
i started to feel a little frustrated.
thwarted.
like my day was wasting away in drips.
i tried to speed up my constant multitasking - dishes, laundery... dishes, laundry... straighten, dishes, laundry - in an effort to feel more productive. and all i felt was more resentful - of jon and the kids, hanging out in sunny's room, reading books.

you've probably caught on to the moral of the story by now.

i spent the last part of my morning a miserable martha. and jon was the mary - spending time with the children he has much missed this last week (and they have desperately missed him, i know), resting, recovering, rejunvenating. reminding me....

the lawn can wait. (say it again. THE LAWN CAN WAIT.) the laundry, the dishes, the toys on the floor... can wait.

the kids can't.

Ohhhh... poor mommy! You're right... the grass will keep growing, regardless of whether it's mowed or not. Might as well wait another day! :o)
