i want every public bathroom to have a toddler chair. you know, the ones with the straps? it should be a law. seriously. :)
i have to say, it's so nice having sunny move out of that toddler stage. you know, the one where they don't listen no matter what, and think a parking lot is an asphalt-covered playground. he will stay by my side now if i ask, and will almost stop running in barnes and noble if i make myself really clear.
and it is definitely a blessing, because sailor is moving on in to take up the slack. she still throws tantrums and kicks her feet, and she thinks that me telling her "no" or calling her back is all some gigantic game. she laughs, and waits for me to do it again.
case in point: the bookstore bathroom this morning. i try really hard not to have to use the restroom when we're out. but every once in a while, you just can't help it. so at ten in the morning i found myself corralling my two small children in the "baby changing" stall at the back of the bathroom.
sunny is thrilled that there's an echo, so he keeps banging on the door and yelling to hear the funny sound. and because there's no one else in there, and it's keeping sailor somewhat entertained, i let him continue. but then (as i'm doing my own stationary thing), she realizes that i can't catch her up at the moment (it's a big stall). so instead of just crawling around on the tile floor in the stall (which is already making me cringe and reach for the purell), she sees that the walls holding her in have OPENINGS AT THE BOTTOM. and crawls out.
"sailor!" i call, frantically trying to finish up. she giggles from the next stall, pokes her head under, and disappears again. "SAILOR!" more laughter. and sunny is still banging away and singing at the top of his voice. i'm convinced she's drinking from the toilet. "COME BACK!" i holler. finally, in desperation, i reach over and unlock the door for sunny. "go get your sister!" i yell at him.
and now they're both loose in the bathroom. "sailow!" i hear him call in a sweet little voice. "come 'ere, sailow!" yes, this will be very effective. "where she is, mommy?"
i growl and stumble out of the door, zipping up my pants. sailor comes crawling out to meet me, grinning hugely. i haul her over to the sink and wash her all over with foamy soap as she wails in protest.
toddler seats. please. :)
