until about a month ago, when she began a love affair with yellow.
anything yellow will do: yellow socks, yellow crayons, yellow blocks, and yellow foods all have equal priority with her. she sorts things by color (well, by "yellow" and "non-yellow"), and her favorite animal is a giraffe. (why? because it's yellow.)
it suits her personality: sunny, bubbly, bright and STRONG. (willed, that is. :)
the funny (or awful) thing is that this obsession has carried over into her school life. there is only one yellow toddler "scoot-scoot" (ride-on without pedals - she is really fast and good at these) on the playground, and she will stop at nothing to get it.
"nothing" including, but not limited to, racing onto the playground to get it first, bribing other kids to get off of it, and, as a last resort, physically removing other children from it. (this last method is not popular with the other children, or with her teachers.)
and when she has gotten the yellow scoot-scoot, she will stay on it THE ENTIRE 30 MiNUTES of outside time. today i watched in awe as she pushed a large plastic yellow car around the sidewalk - while still on her scooter.
her teacher told me (oh-so-tactfully), "this color obsession is kind of weird." this from the woman who has been teaching two year olds for seven years.
"i LELLOW!" she hollers, all the time and everywhere.
and even though she still can't identify any other color with 100% accuracy -
at least i know she's not color blind.
